Green Economy

Lambeth is already home to a thriving green economy – from groundbreaking, high-growth SMEs in Sustainable Ventures, to established scale-ups and a wealth of climate action and innovation led by our civic and community sector.

Lambeth is already home to a thriving green economy – from groundbreaking, high-growth SMEs in Sustainable Ventures, to established scale-ups and a wealth of climate action and innovation led by our civic and community sector. Over 7,000 people are employed in the green economy in Lambeth. We are proud to have supported the creation of Europe’s largest cluster of climate tech businesses at Sustainable Ventures by transforming two floors of County Hall to bring 750 green economy jobs to the borough.

In 2023 we launched our Green Economy Strategy, which sets out how we will support this sector to grow. Since the majority of green economy businesses are micro-enterprises, affordable workspace and funding are top priorities, particularly since entrepreneurs from Black, Asian and other ethnic minority backgrounds face lower success rates in securing investment. There is also a huge opportunity for green skills development as we work towards our net zero targets: 3,000 people would need to be employed full-time on retrofit in Lambeth to reach net zero in our buildings by 2030. Again, we are building from strong foundations, with the South Bank Technical College being one of the leading providers of green skills training in London, and set to expand.

We focus on five key areas to unlock growth in the green economy. 

  • Space and clustering – We will grow the workspace for the sector to encourage clustering. 
  • Funding and investment – We will unlock investment to develop and deploy innovation. 
  • Partnership and advocacy – We will develop a strong business ecosystem and build Lambeth’s identity as the home of the green economy. 
  • Business support – We will direct support to businesses at all stages of growth. 
  • Employment and skills – We will work with employers and educators to equitably grow our diverse talent.
