Boost for temporary affordable workspaces in Brixton

  • A picture of International House

Lambeth Council has reaffirmed its commitment to providing temporary affordable workspace in the heart of Brixton after renewing agreements with operators to provide space until 2027.

The council has extended agreements with Pop Brixton Community Ltd to continue to provide affordable workspace units at its site in Brixton Station Road until December 2026.

An agreement with operators 3Space to provide affordable workspace options at the former council offices in International House in Canterbury Crescent has been extended until March 2027.

There are a range of vacancies at both Pop Brixton and Internation House that are currently available for Lambeth-based start-ups, entrepreneurs, and charities.

The new agreements mean affordable workspace will continue to be available at Pop Brixton and International House while the council continues work on plans for the redevelopment of both sites.

Lambeth Council has partnered with developer London Square to develop new homes as well as a permanent place for Brixton businesses including an affordable workspace hub and upgrades to street market facilities in a sustainable Net Zero development. The project has already undertaken a period of community engagement and co-design with further activities planned and the final scheme will be a sustainable Net Zero development.

The council has been working with 3Space since 2018 to secure vital space for start-ups, charities, and entrepreneurs with a particular focus on those in the creative arts and digital industries.

Pop Brixton was established in 2014 and is a popular food and drink destination, while also remaining committed to supporting local businesses, charities and start-ups as well as hosting cultural events and performances.

Affordable Workspace at Pop Brixton is managed by the charity Create Foundation who specialise in supporting underrepresented groups including young people, to help them develop skills and ideas.

The extensions follow the completion of affordable workspace at Brixton Recreation Centre in Beehive Place. Former International House tenant Photofusion has taken on a lease that includes space for exhibitions as well as darkrooms and photography studios, along with the charity The Advocacy Academy.

It also comes after the opening of 26 new affordable workspace units at Carlton Mansions as part of the Brixton House development that has already provided support to those working in arts or digital industries.
