Summer Streets funding brings new energy to Atlantic Road Car Free Day

London’s Deputy Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries, Justine Simons OBE, joined Lambeth Council representatives, traders, hospitality businesses, and performers on Saturday for a vibrant celebration on Atlantic Road in Brixton.

The event, part of the Council-funded Big Shift Car Free Day programme and co-delivered with Brixton BID, was extended into the evening, creating more opportunities for local businesses to trade later, attract new customers, and benefit from increased footfall. More than 90 local businesses took part, supported by £100,000 in funding secured from the Mayor of London, ahead of new licensing powers set to further boost the capital’s nightlife economy.

Inspired by Brixton BID’s international partnership with Harlem 125th Street in New York, the day transformed Atlantic Road into a buzzing hub of activity, with outdoor dining, DJs, live music, and family entertainment encouraging visitors to spend more time and money in the area. The atmosphere not only boosted hospitality and retail sales but also reinforced Brixton’s reputation as one of London’s most dynamic commercial and cultural destinations.

Councillor Marcia Cameron, Cabinet member for Economic Inclusion, said:

  • Events like this are a perfect example of how we can make our town centres more vibrant, welcoming, and economically resilient. By extending trading hours, increasing footfall, and showcasing the incredible talent and hospitality we have here in Brixton, we’re not only boosting business today, but laying the foundations for long-term growth. This is Lambeth’s Growth Plan in action – creating thriving commercial destinations where businesses and communities can flourish together

Lambeth Council and Brixton BID are now building on this success. Through Summer Streets Funding, Atlantic Road will host additional Car Free Day evening events from July to September, while Brixton Station Road will welcome extended outdoor dining and special market days on selected Saturdays in August and September — creating even more opportunities for local businesses to showcase their offer, grow their customer base, and contribute to a stronger local economy.
