Major application approved – Oval and Kennington Development Area

The redevelopment of a huge brownfield site around the famous Oval gas holder will see 100,000 sq ft of commercial space and 738 homes provided in a key strategic site.

The Grade II listed gas holder will be dismantled, restored and put back up as part of the scheme, with a new block of flats within its frame.

The Berkeley Homes-led project, which will create 5,000 construction jobs and potentially 1,000 permanent jobs once completed, involves the decontamination of former industrial land, which has been restricting other development around the site off Kennington Lane and Vauxhall Street, which is within walking distance of Vauxhall tube.

Cllr Matthew Bennett, Lambeth Cabinet Member for Planning, Investment & New Homes, said: “This is a really positive step for the borough, and demonstrates our commitment to make growth and investment in Lambeth work for local people.”

The entire Oval Village scheme will include 262 affordable rent apartments, plus 147 apartments available under Shared Ownership. The scheme will offer 35% of its apartments as affordable.

The project features high-quality architecture, with building heights between four and 18-storeys that respect local and strategic views, and there will be major improvements to key street frontages in the area and community contributions from the developer worth £9million.
